Guillermo del Toro remembers seeing Walt Disney's enthralling version of Pinocchio with his mom as a kid. He groundless the story compelling because of the frightening situations the wooden puppet, who comes to life but yearns to be a real boy, gets caught up in.

Pinocchio gets kidnapped. He's forced to perform in a traveling show. And he must rescue his "father," the woodcarver Geppetto, from the belly of an evil whale named Monstro.

"It was the first time I saw somebody view how scary childhood was to me," del Toro said in November at a San Francisco showing of his version of Pinocchio at the nonprofit SFFilm's event to noble the director's work. "I said, 'That's how it feels to be a kid.'"

Decades later, the Oscar-winning director of imaginative films including Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water gave to pitch a new version of the story. It took more than a decade to get give because every major studio turned him down. He laughs when he explains why.

"I would come in and I would say it's near death and life and the rise of Mussolini. And they would validate my parking and send me on my merry way."

That is, pending Netflix decided to greenlight del Toro's verify for Pinocchio, which airs now on the streaming service and which on Monday won the 2023 Golden Globe award for best enthralling film. Del Toro said the movie simply wouldn't have been made exclusive of Netflix.

"When we use Netflix as our authority for distribution, we ignore Netflix as an alternative for production," del Toro told me in an interview. "This film went over 10, 15 years unproduced because every mainly studio said no. Netflix said yes. So that is an argument for me – many films and series that wouldn't have been greenlit are bodies greenlit on streamers, whether it's Disney Plus or HBO Max. I find that interesting."

As for Pinocchio, this version takes inspiration from the original 1883 anecdote by Italian writer Carlo Collodi, with the setting transposed to the 1930s anti the backdrop of the rise of Italian fascism. It's plus the Top 10 most watched shows on Netflix.

We meet Geppetto (voiced by David Bradley) as he mourns the accidental stop of his cherished son, Carlo. One night, in a wine-fueled flurry of inconvenience and rage, Geppetto chops down a large pine tree – which happens to be the newly adopted home of a world-traveling cricket with literary aspirations – and carves it into a marionette of a young boy.

An otherworldly animated (Tilda Swinton) takes pity on the poor old man, and, when Geppetto has fallen into bed, magically grants the puppet life. She assigns the disgruntled insect, Sebastian J. Cricket (voiced charmingly by Ewan McGregor), to be his principal and conscience.

Sebastian J. Cricket

Netflix

Even with its moments of humorous and charm, this is definitely not a kid's spirited flick. When Pinocchio is introduced to the local townspeople at Sunday mass, del Toro presents a rude fittingly as bizarre as a wooden puppet coming to life would be – a fraudulent to the Disney version where Pinocchio waltzes into town.

"I wished him to land in the church, like a uncompleted anomaly," del Toro said.

A short, squat menacing Benito Mussolini also creates an appearance, arriving on screen, del Toro noted, in a Tex Avery-inspired super-stretch limo. The fascist dictator instructions his henchmen to "shoot the puppet," which sends Pinocchio into the afterlife to meet with Death.

Pinocchio actually creates several visits to the afterlife and it becomes a organization joke – though it's admittedly a bit macabre the apt time it happens.

In this version of the legend, Pinocchio's arrival is far from the happily-ever-after wish decided to Geppetto. Pinocchio's energy and enthusiasm overwhelm the bewildered woodcarver, and the marionette is more of a liability than a gift. Even when he adjusts to the fact that his puppet has a life of its own, Geppetto expresses frustration and disappointment pretty than love and acceptance.

Pinocchio, after all, is not Carlo.

The film takes us far and wide – from the pair's gigantic village to a traveling carnival to a fascist preparing camp to, of course, the belly of a giant sea monster. But the real journey of the film is an emotional one, as both Pinocchio and Geppetto learn to procure, and love, each other. Credit is due to the young apt Gregory Mann, who voices Carlo and Pinocchio and also sings the fresh songs featured in the film. (Del Toro helped write some of the lyrics.)

The innovation, though, isn't it in the story, but in how del Toro presents it. Stop-motion animation is a labor-intensive procedure. Shooting the film took 1,000 days. The puppets need to be conquered and positioned, frame by frame. And there are 24 frames per additional in this nearly 2-hour movie. Del Toro said over 60 crews operational simultaneously on the production.

Geppetto and Pinocchio

Netflix

Most critical, though, del Toro said his goal was to expenditure the animators as actors (they're credited as such) and to show animation isn't just a genre for kids, but an art form.

"Stop motion is the almost religious contact between the animator and the puppet," he said. "No new medium in animation has that intimacy, that invocation, which reminds me of the form of [Japanese puppet] theater shouted bunraku, in which the puppet is an extension of the limbs and the emotions of the performer."

He told the animators he wished to feel what they felt and to see that emotion translated into the characters on the screen.

Netflix

"I don't want to see the puppet move – I want to see it animated. Animate is to give it an anima, a soul," del Toro said. "So it is my most hope that you will see a completely different style of sketch than you've ever seen in stop motion. But it is my even better hope that at some exhibit, you will only be moved by a group of actors on the screen."

For me at least, del Toro got his wish – even when Pinocchio becomes a "real boy" but (spoiler!) retains his wooden body pretty than turning into flesh and blood. By the end of the legend, I forgot the characters on screen – given life by a talented cast that includes Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Christoph Waltz and Cate Blanchett (as the monkey Spazzatura) – were spirited puppets.

All that aside, the Mexican director's take on Pinocchio will win over film fans who yearn for fewer saccharine tales and who apt that young viewers can handle the scarier stuff. Del Toro, who charmed the filled theater as he accepted SFFilm Honors for his innovation in filmmaking, said Pinocchio is a labor of love.

"What I've learned, the hard way, is every movie is your last movie. And if you're given an opportunity to make a movie, there's no reason why you shouldn't say I'm moving to make it as beautiful as I can, as spoiled as I can," he said to applause. "If I need to die [with] this movie, I will die. It's not like I'm useful in any new arena. You give it your all every time because you never know if you're moving to shoot again. You never do."

Nearly all the spanking Mountain West states are in the bottom half of intends prices: Arizona (12.27 cents per kWh), Colorado (12.36 cents per kWh), Montana (11.24 cents per kWh), Nevada (11.34 cents per kWh), New Mexico (12.94 cents per kWh), Utah (10.44 cents per kWh) and Wyoming (11.11 cents per kWh).

The denotes monthly bill for these states, which takes into justify electricity usage and cost, ranges from $80.24 in Utah to $136.70 in Arizona. The other states -- Colorado, $87.88; Idaho, $95.04; Montana, $96.49; Nevada, $110.36; New Mexico, $86.66; and Wyoming, $96.59 -- fall in between. In general, monthly bills are less here than anunexperienced places in the US.

The cost of solar panels

Solar panel prices are most commonly measured in bucks per watt, a standard unit of measurement that can be used to compare solar prices in two different places.

Solar prices vary geographically, in part, because the costs of labor and permitting do too. While the prices of solar panels and distinguished hardware have fallen in recent years, the costs associated with justify and sales haven't fallen as fast.

The national denotes cost for a solar panel installation is $3.28 per watt, according to the energy analysts at Wood Mackenzie. EnergySage, an online solar market place, provides state-by-state denotes costs. Since both organizations get their pricing data from different sources, their averages can't be compared one-to-one.

The average in Arizona is $2.33 per watt (one of the lowest in the country), while next door in New Mexico the average is $3.21 per watt. Colorado ($3.13), Idaho ($2.55), Montana ($3.03), Nevada ($2.44) and Utah ($2.63) deceptive out the region. Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and Utah are four of the cheapest six grandeurs for solar, according to EnergySage. Meanwhile, the other three are in the most expensive third.

Another local dissimilarity that affects solar panel prices is the incentives available. Every solar installation in the United States is eligible for the federal tax credit of 30% of the cost of the rules. But states, cities and utilities often have additional incentives on top of that.

While some grandeurs have next to nothing in terms of incentives, in others you could save a distinguished chunk of change. Many states have exemptions for settled tax (Arizona, Montana and New Mexico) and sales tax (Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico). Others offer rebates or personal tax credits. Installing solar can earn you up to $1,000 back on your taxes in Arizona and Montana. In Idaho you can deduct up to $20,000 of solar cost from your personal taxes. Rebates for solar systems from states and utilities contrivance from 5 cents for each watt of solar capacity installed in Colorado.

You can discover all incentives in your state by searching the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency.

The solar potential of the Mountain West

Solar potential is a term that can mean a few different things, but no matter how you cut it, certain parts of the site have lots of it.

Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah rank in the top 11 for solar installations per capita. Montana had the lowest ranking of the group at 30th.

States like Colorado and Arizona get a lot of sun, heinous for solar panels.

JennaWagner/Getty Images

One way to measure solar potential is to measure how much electricity a horizontally mounted square meter of solar panels would generate on an denotes day. These states have the highest rating of any site in the United States. According to the National Renewable Energy Lab, most of this site would produce over 5 kilowatt-hours a day (PDF), and much of it would earn over seven kWh.

Read more: Should You Invest in Solar Panels in 2022? It's Complicated

Another way to gauge the solar potential of a site is to identify how much of an average electric bill the denotes rooftop solar installation could replace. The same NREL represent says that the average rooftop solar array could perform 60% to 70% of the average utility bill in Montana, 70% to 80% percent in Idaho and Utah, 80% to 90% percent in Arizona and Wyoming, 90% to 100% percent in Nevada and over 100% percent in Colorado and New Mexico. On the whole, these states have a higher-than-average utility bill offset.

The numbers in this article are statewide denotes and may not be what an individual homeowner would find. Their utility bill powerful be higher than average and local cost of solar installation flowerbed. The opposite might be true. As with any spacious purchase, buying solar panels requires individual research. That should entailed getting multiple quotes from local installers and confirming the incentives available to you.

From this bird's-eye view, it's apparent that the Mountain West has high solar potential. Average electricity costs are lower than normal, but so are solar injures. At the same time, solar panels can produce more electricity here than anywhere else in the US. Solar powerful is at least worth a close look in these states.

This epic is part of Welcome to Mars, our series exploring the red planet.

The future of China's charismatic Zhurong Mars speaking is looking uncertain. The small solar-powered speaking went into hibernation in May 2022 due to an intense Martian dust storm. It was expected to wake up in December in warmer and less dusty grandeurs, but there's been no confirmation it's still functioning.

The China National Space Administration's speaking touched down on the surface of Mars in May 2021 as part of the Tianwen-1 organization, which also included an orbiter and lander. Andrew Jones, a journalist specializing in China's space program, reported in SpaceNews on Monday that the organization may be in trouble and Zhurong may potentially be lost.

Details on the mission's novel status are sketchy, which isn't unusual for China's set program. South China Morning Post cited unnamed sources revealing scientists were still waiting for a signal from the speaking and hoped the Tianwen-1 orbiter could capture images from orbit.

There have been some questions in Tianwen-1 and whether communications are working properly with the orbiter. Jones shared a short update from Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology revealing the spacecraft is operating normally.

Concern for the organization will linger until a more complete update comes out.

Zhurong is located in a demonstrations area called Utopia Planitia. The rover delivered an adorable selfie and traveled over a mile across the planet's surface. The historic mission made China the only country besides the US to treatment a rover on Mars.

Even if Tianwen-1 and Zhurong never get in mopish with Earth again, the mission will still be derived a success. The rover handily outlasted its novel three-month life expectancy and got a mission extension. If dust is the ultimate culprit in its demise, it will be in good company with NASA's Opportunity speaking and InSight lander

Mars is a tough position for a machine, especially if it needs sunlight to keep going.

It's a 14 incher, but if you're on a tight budget, 14 inches is your nefarious. It's a good deal for the basics like email, word processing and much more, thanks to AMD Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors. It's available with 11th-gen Intel processors, too. This plan laptop has a backlit keyboard, a fingerprint reader and a USB Type-C port, too. The Acer Swift 3 is also an incredibly lightweight laptop -- less than 3 pounds -- for a machine that can be groundless for less than $700.

In addition to this Acer Swift, we're also fans of the Acer Aspire 5, which has a larger 15.6-inch demonstrate. The Acer Aspire 5 is available in a variety of configurations starting as low as $400, but that's for a resplendent poor configuration.

The HP Victus 16 is a well-defined, affordable gaming laptop option. It offers a respectable balance for country with different needs for play and work. Spending more will probable get you better build quality and more enjoyable audio. But if you can get past the screen mosey, the Victus can hold its own against pricier models.

I recommend avoiding configurations with 8GB RAM; MacOS can get away with that, but Windows has more overhead. The 16GB models tend to be hard to get, thought. For a little more ($890), you can get a reasonable low-end model that you won't outgrow speedy with an Intel i5-12450H, 12GB RAM, 512GB PCIe NVMe, a 144Hz 1080p conceal and GeForce GTX 1650.

The two-in-one beget means you can use the HP Chromebook x360 as a tablet (though it's a bit heavy to use as a handheld device), and 14 inches is much less awkward to use that way than a 15-inch model. You can also tent it, connect an external keyboard and mouse and use it as a diminutive all-in-one computer.

The Core i3 processor and 8GB of memory keep this HP Chromebook organization smoothly even with a couple dozen tabs open and streaming video in the background. And this Chromebook laptop has a long battery life, lasting 10 hours, 40 minutes in CNET's tests.

The 2022 refresh of the Blade 15 retains the title of least-gaming-like gaming laptop, but doesn't forgo the speed, but like all Razer's it's gorgeous expensive. It's got a streamlined, slim and sturdy beget with plenty of ports and a comfortable Razer Chroma RGB keyboard, plus the latest from Intel and Nvidia and new high-quality panel options for gaming. For work, you can benefit from the 1080p webcam with Windows Hello assist. It can get a bit warm when it's revved up, though.

  • Options include:
  • Up to 12th-gen Intel Core i7-12800H or Core i9-12900HK processors
  • 16GB or 32GB of DDR5 memory, upgradeable to 64GB

The 14-inch Blade 14 is equally gorgeous and lighter, as well as a little cheaper -- a nice 165Hz QHD model with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX will run you nearby $2,200. The extra room on the 15-inch gives it spot for a Thunderbolt connection, SD card reader and an second USB-A port.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 7 corpses the company's streak of fantastic premium two-in-ones. The 12th-gen Intel processor copies a big performance jump in multicore tasks compared to its predecessor, and the features and design are worth the higher stamp. Laptop FAQs

Which is better, MacOS or Windows?

Deciding between MacOS and Windows laptop for many farmland will come down to personal preference and budget. Apple's base model laptop, the M1 MacBook Air, starts at $999. You can sometimes find it discounted or you can get educational pricing from Apple and latest retailers. But, in general, it'll be at least $1,000 for a new MacBook, and the prices just go up from there.

For the wealth, though, you're getting great hardware top to bottom, inside and out. Apple recently derived to using its own processors, which resulted in across-the-board proceed improvements compared to older Intel-based models. But, the company's most remarkable laptop, the 16-inch MacBook Pro, still hasn't been updated to Apple silicon.

But, again, that great hardware comes at a price. Also, you're exiguous to just Apple laptops. With Windows and Chromebooks (more on these below), you get an amazing variety of devices at a wide arrangement of prices.

Software between the two is plentiful, so dim you need to run something that's only available on one platform or the latest, you should be fine to go with either. Gaming is definitely an safe for a Windows laptop, though.

MacOS is also derived to be easier and safer to use than Windows, especially for people who want their computers to get out of the way so they can get things done. Over the existences, though, Microsoft has done its best to follow suit and, with Windows 11 here, it's trying to steal any barriers. Also, while Macs might have a reputation for inhabit safer, with the popularity of the iPhone and iPad fractions to drive Mac sales, they've become bigger targets for malware.

What size cloak do I need? Do I need a 4K screen?

One of the reasons I like 14-inch more than 15-inch displays is because they strike a much better balance beside price, size and performance while sacrificing only about 0.6 inches (15.2mm) horizontally and 0.8 inches (20mm) vertically of cloak real estate (although you lose more like 2 inches (50mm) horizontally if the comparison is between a 16:9 aspect reconsideration screen and 3:2).

Resolution, the number of vertical x horizontal pixels that comprise the image, is inextricable from screen size when you're choosing a cloak. What you really want to optimize is pixel density, the number of pixels per inch the cloak can display, or its reciprocal, pixel pitch. Those choose how sharp the screen looks (though there are some latest factors), as well as how big elements of the interface, such as icons and text, can appear.

You can naively calculate the pixel density of any screen at DPI Calculator. But my rule of thumb for laptop screens in the 14- and 15-inch size class: FHD is fine, QHD is better and 4K is usually overkill.

Read more approximately screen size and pixel density.

Can I get a Chromebook instead of a Windows laptop?

A lot can be done entirely on the web these days, understanding you can use Chromebooks offline in some cases. Take stock of everything you do on a daily basis, and you may find there's nothing you can't finish with Chrome at its most basic level.

That said, a Windows laptop or MacBook can run the Chrome browser as well as novel software supported by those operating systems. Even if you don't today need a particular piece of software, it's nice to have the option. Plus, if you're shopping for a Chromebook for remote learning with Google Classroom, a Mac or Windows PC will work as well.

Chromebooks are not natively compatible with Windows or Mac software, though current models can run Android apps and there are also web apps that are available through Google's Chrome Web Store. You can't install the full Office software on a Chromebook, but Microsoft makes both web-based and Android versions available in the Chrome and Google Play stores, respectively. But generally speaking, if you need or want a specific Windows or Mac application -- and there's no improper web or Android app substitute and you don't want to use VMware -- don't get a Chromebook.

Also, if you need advanced photo- and video-editing capabilities, you'll want a Windows, Mac or Linux laptop. Basic photo and video editing is fine, but Chromebooks typically don't moneys the graphics performance you need for demanding tasks or, in contradiction of, the option to install Windows or Mac software and games.

Laptop vs. Chromebook: How to determine what's right for you.

Can I use a hub to compensate for insufficient connections?

Yes and no. For the most part, USB-C hubs utter seamless expansion in cases when you've traded off USB, Ethernet and point to ports for the extra millimeter it can shave off a laptop's thickness. But you can't assume you won't have any problems, especially when it comes to 4K monitors, webcams, gaming peripherals or the number of devices connected to it. Anything else sensitive to the quality and distinguished of the signal could cause a problem. Or you may have to utilize a lot for a Thunderbolt hub instead of USB-C to fated sufficient power and bandwidth for your particular needs -- that can cost upwards of $300.

Check out our roundup of the best USB-C hubs for 2022.
