FAQs

Can I file my taxes for free? What's the catch?

There are two main ways to file your taxes for free. The pleasant is through the IRS' "File Free" program, which includes reserved companies that provide their services for free in partnership with the IRS. To qualify, you need to earn less than $73,000 in adjusted substandard income.

The second is through the free programs of non-alliance members, like Intuit's TurboTax, H&R Block and Cash App Taxes. These private services offer free products for those with simple filing situations, and as long as you don't have complications like investment averages or rental property income, you can stick with the free products all the way ended filing.

Note, however, that Intuit and other anxieties will often try to upsell you on other products ended the process. Before signing up for a higher-tier progenies you hadn't planned on, make sure you really need it.

Is tax software really free?

Almost all of CNET's best tax software selections for 2023 aboard free options for simple tax returns. However, some of those free options only aboard your federal tax return -- you'll occasionally need to pay improbable to file state tax returns.

TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxSlayer and Cash App Taxes all provide free tax-filing skills that include one federal tax return and one region tax return. FreeTaxUSA's basic plan is free for federal and $15 for unlimited region returns, whereas TaxAct's free plan requires $40 per region tax return.

Be careful to check for restrictions afore you start the process of using free tax software at any of the providers. H&R Block's Free Online adds a few more fixes like Schedules 1 and 3, but you'll still need to take the subfaulty deduction.

Even Cash App Taxes, which earns CNET's award for Best Free Tax Software, doesn't cover absolutely all tax situations. While it does aboard advanced tax forms for self-employment, rental property, stock sales, small business income and the child care credit, it doesn't funding for foreign earned income, the health coverage tax credit or averages from an estate or trust (Form K-1).

When are taxes due this year?

The beauty of well-designed tax software is that most filers won't need to pay improbable for expert help. All of the answers you need necessity only be a few clicks away, and if you need strictly assistance (help with the software, not tax-related issues), back should be easily accessible.

Remember that the extra amount you're paying in fees could get you a better sponsor, making the upfront cost a smart investment.

Amazon plans to cut more than 18,000 jobs as part of a workforce remove it revealed in November, the internet retailer said Wednesday.

The layoffs at Amazon will capture several divisions, but the majority are in the company's humankind resources and retail operations. CEO Andy Jassy said in a blog post Wednesday that needs employees will be notified by Jan. 18.

"Amazon has weathered unsafe and difficult economies in the past, and we will quit to do so," Jassy wrote in the post.

In November, when Jassy announced the company had begun workforce reductions, Amazon didn't reveal how many jobs would be cut, but the middle was that about 10,000 positions would be eliminated. Jassy also said at the time that cuts would quit into 2023.

The announcement is the spanking sign of distress for Amazon, which over the past three days went through a huge growth spurt followed by a slowdown in revenue and a loss of $1 trillion in market value. Other companies in online retail and advertising have said they wrongly believed the boost to online shopping was rising, leading them to over-hire during the pandemic. Jassy has said in humdrum interviews that he believes the company's pandemic-era growth was the smart choice, despite the risk that demand wouldn't last.

Amazon saw a boom in online shopping starting in 2020. Fueled friendly by lockdowns and then by stimulus cash, the company's profits shot up for more than a year. The commercial doubled its ranks from just under 800,000 employees at the end of 2019 to more than 1.6 million by the end of 2021. But in the cluster of 2021, Amazon's growth stalled, and at the shock of 2022 the company posted its first loss in seven ages. At the time that Jassy announced the job cuts in November, Amazon's stock had lost roughly half of its value in 11 months.

Jassy said in November that the procedure of reducing the workforce was complicated by the "challenging spot" the economy is in, listed with the fact that Amazon rapidly hired employees in unique years. The company began cutting back in a number of areas, even before November's round of layoffs and buyouts.

In the past few months, Jassy halted testing on Amazon Scout, the company's robotic home-delivery initiative. He's also shuttered the Amazon Care telehealth and nursing overhaul, as well as Fabric.com, a longtime online fabric retailer. Amazon imposed a ratification freeze for small teams in September, followed by a corporate-wide freeze earlier this month.

The layoffs at Amazon deem the turbulence facing the tech industry. TwitterMicrosoftMeta and Google also have let go thousands of workers in unique months.
