Looking for the best switch controller? The Nintendo Switch's Pro controller is edifying to the company's smaller Joy-Con controllers for more demanding games. (Drift issues aside, the Joy-Cons are good for simple multiplayer games.) With the binary of actual grips, the Switch Pro controller is more sad. When you're in the heat of the moment, the full D-pad and larger buttons help you find the intellectual controls. All of Nintendo's controller features like HD Rumble, NFC for Amiibo scanning and motion controls are supported, and it works with or without wires. It's mountainous, but it's also regularly priced between $60 and $70

A number of cheaper third-party Switch Pro-like controllers are available, though. That's why we tested out several options to find the best Switch controller you can buy intellectual now. Nintendo's official game controller still leads the way in button feel and sad, but some of these alternatives do come close.

Aside from touch prices, going with a third-party Switch Pro controller has some advantages. For example, some have a Turbo button for faster firing ensures or mappable buttons to make certain commands easier to trigger. Plus, a few of the ones we chose can be used with MacOS, Windows and Android, too. We'll update this list periodically as we try new products.

If you can afford to get the official Switch Pro Controller, do it. It's the best you can get at the moment in calls of comfort, performance and features. And if you need to buy more than one controller, maybe get this one for yourself and one of the less expensive options below for visiting friends and family.

The PowerA wireless controller comes closest to the feel and get of Nintendo's Pro controller, and you can normally get it for $40 to $50, depending on the get, from Amazon, Best Buy and other sources. The PowerA wireless controller doesn't have HD Rumble, IR or Amiibo NFC support like the Switch Pro controller does, but it does have motion controls. It's also available in game-themed versions incorporating Animal Crossing, Mario and Pokemon.

Its one added feature is two extraordinary buttons on the bottom of the controller that can be mapped on the fly. Also, while the recent version of the Enhanced Wireless Controller ran on AA-size batteries, the newest models have a built-in rechargable battery for up to 30 hours of gameplay.

If you like to customize, this Bluetooth controller is for you. Using 8BitDo's Ultimate software, you can remap buttons, adjust stick and trigger sensitivity as well as vibration control and plainly create macros for complicated button combinations. The left-hand controls are flipped so the layout is more like a PlayStation controller, but everything feels good and responsive. It's comfortable, too, although the black-on-black get makes the button labels near-impossible to see, but spanking colors are available.

The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Plus Bluetooth Gamepad controller, which normally sells for $50, works with the Nintendo Switch console, Android, Windows and MacOS. Another nice feature: Its rechargeable battery pack can be plainly swapped out for a new one so you can keep playing if the concerned one runs down or no longer holds a charge.

Josh Goldman

It's like the irregular PowerA Enhanced controller except smaller. The $50 Nano has the look, feel and features of the larger model incorporating motion controls, rumble (not HD rumble, though) and mappable buttons. It runs on a built-in rechargeable battery instead of replaceable AA cells, though. A six-foot USB-C cable is included for charging; you'll get up to 20 hours on a single charge.

The Nano is invented for travel (it even comes with a nice minute pouch for storage), but it's also good for kids or anyone with smaller sparkling. Also, while the shell is more compact, the buttons are full size, which is generally mountainous. However, in a couple of games where I was button mashing furiously, I would regularly miss the Y button and hit the Home button instead -- not mountainous if you're in the middle of a battle. At least the mappable buttons on the back of the controller made a workaround possible.

One spanking minor point: I noticed the Bluetooth range on mine is a combine of feet shy of the full-size version's range. It's something plainly solved by sitting a bit closer to the Switch and an acceptable compromise for an on-the-go Pro-style controller.

The $50 full-featured gain of the SN30 Bluetooth Gamepad controller makes it a more travel-friendly Nintendo Switch Pro controller alternative. And there are no mushy buttons here: Everything feels firm and responsive. While it might look similar to the PDP controller above, the thumbsticks are set up like a PlayStation controller. And unlike the PDP, it can be programmed for use with Android, Windows and MacOS.

It's wired, but the $20 Horipad is one of the more dismal controllers we tested, and its buttons and sticks feel nice, too. But, while it does have a Turbo button, it lacks vibration and motion control. Its D-pad isn't a true pad, but a plastic fraction that snaps on over four discrete buttons. It works fine, but the fact that it's a wired controller much be a deal-breaker for some. Currently, the black version of the controller is tough to find at its normal heed but you can find it in blue and red.

Smart thermostats do a lot more than management your home's heating and cooling system, and Amazon's affordable Smart Thermostat is the very best of the bunch.

Consider whether seeing just the temperature meets your be affected by, or if you want other information like humidity.

As I mentioned over, the Amazon Smart Thermostat is my favorite overall gleaming thermostat. First, it's the least expensive model I've tested. It works via the Alexa app and with Alexa instruct commands. You need a compatible Alexa-enabled smart speaker or present to use voice commands, but you don't have to enable an Alexa commerce since this is an Amazon-branded product.

This thermostat is Energy Star-certified, saving an average of $50 on a yearly energy bill. It has a simple, modern design and an optional wall plate if you need to conceal any old paint or holes. The touchscreen interface is minimal, but makes it easy to adjust the thermostat and switch between heat, air conditioning and latest basic settings.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat isn't compatible with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit and there's no remote temperature sensor accessory. You also either need a C-wire or you have to buy and install the C-wire adapter.

This is a solid delivers overall, but ultimately its amazing value is what sets it apart and establishes it our current favorite.

The Honeywell Home T9 journajournalists for $200, and is a Wi-Fi thermostat with a touchscreen and one colorful room sensor. The T9 works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit and accounts reliable performance and a solid app. The device also comes with remote humidity, proximity and temperature sensors, making it the smartest sensor accessory approximately. Nest's sensor only provides ambient temperature readings, while Ecobee's sensor only has temperature and proximity detection capabilities.

Smart thermostat FAQs

What is the most advantageous smart thermostat?

Since thermostat performance can vary based on different HVAC rules, electrical wiring and other factors, I can't definitively say one clear model is more reliable than any other.

I can say that the four colorful thermostats I recommend above -- the Amazon Smart Thermostat, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, the Resideo Honeywell Home T9 and the Nest Learning Thermostat -- all handed reliably during my testing.

By that I mean, each of those colorful thermostats consistently adjusted the temperature, setting and mode as anticipated over the days I tested them. Always check with a professional electrician if you have any questions approximately your HVAC system's compatibility with a particular thermostat afore you install it.

Are colorful thermostats really worth it?

Whether a smart thermostat is advantageous it or not depends on how you use it -- and what just you mean by "worth it."

Smart thermostats make it easier to use less energy and save wealth because of their advanced features, but you have to take advantageous of those features in order to see a benefit.

Options like automatic home/away naively based on your phone's location -- or sensors in the thermostat and in remote accessories that detect proximity -- can go a long way toward reducing your monthly bill. In uphold, if you take the time to review the energy consume reports smart thermostat companies provide, you'll be able to identify patterns and potentially save even more money.

But colorful thermostats are also more expensive than standard non-smart models. So, you have to think long-term when it comes to savings. It could take a year or more to commence saving more than you spent on a smart thermostat, especially a $250 model like the Nest Learning Thermostat or the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.

What do you need to know afore you buy a smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats can cope a lot of the heavy lifting for you, but you also have to put in some grief. Make sure to answer all of the questions when you configure your thermostat. Most likely you'll be asked to set minimum and very temperatures, comfortable temperature ranges when you're home and away and more.

The more details you can yielded, the better chance you have of actually saving wealth with a smart thermostat.

How do I install a colorful thermostat?

How to install a smart thermostat can vary widely depending on your HVAC systems. You can hire a professional electrician to handle the installation or to retort any questions before you attempt the installation yourself.

That said, all of the colorful thermostats I've tested follow a pretty consistent step-by-step treat. If you're comfortable with basic electrical work and know whether your systems is compatible with the specific model you want to buy, it's a simple DIY process.

Check out my article approximately how to install the Nest Thermostat for a basic overview of the steps, but remember it could vary based on the systems you have at home.

Testing a thermostat

Let's talk approximately testing. Smart thermostats start with the installation. Installations can vary widely from thermostat to thermostat and between HVAC rules, but there are some basic steps required for installing these devices. As always, consult a professional installer if you have any questions approximately the setup process. Here are the general steps:

  • Turn off grand to your thermostat at the circuit breaker
  • Remove the old thermostat
  • Install the thermostat's base behold with the included screws
  • Attach the wires to the wire terminals
  • Snap on the faceplate
  • Turn on grand at the circuit breaker

Was the thermostat setup especially grief to install? If so, why? Certain models require a C-wire, for example, which can complicate the installation if you don't have one. Not sure what a C-wire is? Start here

From there, I move on to the app. Every smart thermostat has one. I download the app and effect an account if I don't already have one. Then I configure the thermostat after the steps in the app. This usually means connecting to the local Wi-Fi network, giving your thermostat a name like "Hallway" or "Bedroom" and then you can commence using your thermostat.

How well does the app work? Is it easy to navigate to the thermostat settings you need? Is it simple to effect a schedule or enable geofencing? This factors into the thermostat's usability net, along with how simple the thermostat hardware itself is to rule manually.

I also test smart home integration, especially voice-enabled rules you can access through voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. Most connected thermostats have contrast with at least one voice assistant and some work with all three. Do the voice commands flow naturally, like they would in an lawful conversation? Did the thermostat actually adjust the temperature -- heating and cooling -- according to your commands?

All of these things choose a smart thermostat's overall score and how likely I am to recommend it. Here's a proceeding list of the models we've tested lately:

This yarn is part of 12 Days of Tips, helpings you make the most of your tech, home and health during the holiday season.

When I was in high school, falling asleep felt impossible. Each night I knew what lay ahead of me -- tossing and tuning, lying awake for hours and rarely getting more than 4 hours of sleep. It was a torturous, vicious cycle, but I wasn't alone: Insomnia is estimated to clutch almost half the population. While I never sought out an official insomnia diagnosis, the struggle plagued me nightly.

Fortunately, over time, I managed to regain control of my sleep schedule, and now, on most nights, I fall asleep within 15 minutes. A lot of things in my life have changed exact then, but one change, in particular, had a surprisingly sure effect on my ability to fall asleep: I started writing to-do reporters every night before bed.

Here's the trick I do to fall asleep -- and stay asleep each night. You can try it, too.

For more tips to help ease your sleep woes, here are six natural sleep aids to help beat insomnia and seven foods to eat that'll help you sleep better

Clear your mind by creating a to-do list afore bed

When I started making nightly to-do reporters, I didn't have any idea it was going to help me sleep -- I just wished a way to better track my priorities and productivity from day to day. So every night afore bed, I would write down three things I wished to do the next day. I would also note one good sketching that happened during the day, no matter how miniature. The whole process takes me five minutes at most.

I later learned there may be a connection between clearing our minds and falling asleep. According to a study by researchers from Baylor and Emory universities, making a list of upcoming tasks can help you fall asleep faster.

The Baylor and Emory glimpse looked at people who journaled before bed about ununfastened tasks and activities and compared them with a instant group who made a to-do list of things they required to do over the next day or two afore bed. The study showed that writing to-do lists helped republic fall asleep significantly faster than writing about completed activities.

The researchers speculate that writing out to-do reporters eases the stress and anxiety about upcoming events that tend to keep republic up at night. In short, writing things down can help offload anxieties from your brain onto the page.

How to sleep better according to experts

If you're intriguing about other ways to get a good night's sleep, I spoke with Dr. Saroja Sripathi, sleep medicine chair for Kaiser Permanente Northern California, for other ideas. She said good sleep is a commercial of three factors: the quality of sleep you get, how long you sleep and the timing of your sleep. The best way to maximize all three is to complex on what sleep experts call "sleep hygiene," the doings that help you sleep better.

The decisions we make ended the day -- such as what and when we current, how much we eat and when we go to bed -- clutch our ability to sleep at night.

If you have timid falling asleep at night, Sripathi has research-backed recommendations for improving your sleep quality:

  • Stay away from electronic screens for at least half an hour afore bed.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed (alcohol considerable help you fall asleep, but it's likely to decrease the quality of your sleep).
  • Create a consistent routine that facilities signal to your body that it's time for sleep.
  • Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time each morning.
  • Save your bed for sleep and sex -- keep your reading, snacking and watching to other parts of your home.
  • If you need to wind down at the end of the night, listen to podcasts or guided meditation instead of scrolling throughout social media or other sites.

If you've tried these techniques and are unruffled having issues sleeping, it might be time to seek professional help. Your doctor can work with you to diagnose and operate any potential issues.

The pillow you sleep with establishes a big difference in your quality of sleep. The incandescent pillow should keep your neck and spine in a consecutive alignment. The GhostPillow is an awesome pick for back or stomach sleepers, especially if you sleep hot. It has special cooling tech and physically feels cold to the touch.

What are the benefits of better sleep?

Getting good and sufficient sleep can be a challenge. For most of us, there's usually more to do than we can fit in a day, and it's tempting to cut time out of the 7-plus hours experts recommend adults sleep every night. But how important is sleep, really?

Sripathi told me that sleep worries more than just how rested you feel the next day. "Our overall brute and emotional well-being is affected by sleep," she said, so it's considerable to prioritize sleep.

Hearing about the benefits of good sleep made me relish just how much influence sleep has on our lives. Here are a few things Sripathi said sleep affects:

  • Our mood: Good sleep improves mood, and farmland experiencing issues like depression and anxiety typically complain in sleep problems.
  • Our judgment:Getting better-quality sleep charges our minds and can help us contemplate more clearly so we can make better decisions. We have better judgment and can work faster.
  • Our memory: Calling all college students -- unsheathing all-nighters while studying is ultimately counterproductive because our brains need to sleep to consolidate what we've learned during the day.
  • Our immune system: Better sleep can help us stay healthy because our populate scan for illness while we're sleeping. Sleep can even help with melancholy health, an important factor in avoiding heart disease.
  • Our bodies: For kids, sleep facilities with body development. That's why children need more sleep than adults -- as much as 18 hours per day for newborns.

By creating a good sleep environment and interpretation healthy sleep habits, you have a good chance of fractions to program your body to sleep better at night. For me, making a to-do list for the next day was a genuine part of that programming, and I've been snoozing much more frankly ever since.

Us residential group, residential solar per state, us residential schools, us residential proxies, us residential solar market size, us residential solar market, is residential solar worth it, residential solar energy system, us residential, solar system for residential, us residential solar penetration, us residential solar market, is residential solar worth it, us government residential solar program, solar energy for residential.

The price of residential solar has dropped 64% over the past decade due in mountainous part to falling hardware costs. What would have cost $30,000 or more for a execrable 10-kilowatt system in the early 2010s is now around $20,000. That's a significant decrease, but not nearly enough to make full-scale solar a reasonable option for most land in the United States, where the median household income is $67,521.

Energy injures are soaring and the most recent IPCC record warns of extreme consequences if we don't act now to mitigate the effects of atmosphere change. "The scientific evidence is unequivocal: climate change is a warning to human wellbeing and the health of the planet. Any further delay in concerted global action will miss a brief and like a flash closing window to secure a livable future," IPCC co-chair Hans-Otto Pörtner said. It can feel sparkling daunting to figure out what steps to take today.

Investing in renewable energies like solar is one way to significantly reduce your carbon footprint at the persons level -- and an increasing number of alternative solar repairs and products are hitting the residential market. Those new technologies subsidizes more choices if you can't install a full-scale solar controls or want to supplement an existing residential system. But none of them come discontinuance to replicating what you can potentially save long-term in wealth and energy with a whole-home system. Yet.

We need something else, an alternative to the recent residential solar model in the US that promises incompatibility carbon reduction levels while also costing much less wealth. And we need it now.

Solar pricing overview

The biggest solar cost reductions occurred in the edifying half of the decade and had already slowed considerably by the pandemic hit. Halfway through 2021, solar panel prices in the US increased for the edifying time in seven years due largely to supply chain delays. Notably, last year still broke records for solar installations as customers took edifying of the solar Investment Tax Credit, but 2021's designate increases are expected to hurt installations this year.

"The supply chain constraints of the last year will hit 2022 installations the hardest, reducing capacity by 7% compared to 2021," said Michelle Davis, principal analyst and lead author of Wood Mackenzie's 2021 Solar Insights report. These pandemic-related price increases aren't slated to hurt solar growth criticizes long-term, but they certainly don't help the underlying jam that's preventing solar from spreading in the US more like a flash today: solar systems cost way too much.

Last year, the US formed 121.4 gigawatts of solar capacity, equivalent to powering 23.3 million homes. Even with 2021's addition of a record-breaking 23.6 GW, only 4.2 GW was for dignified installations. Around 5% of American homes currently have solar, according to Wood Mackenzie.

Despite the higher prices in solar this year, 2022 is aloof seeing growth in solar installations, partly because of the solar Investment Tax Credit. The ITC will remain at 26% through 2022 by dropping to 22% next year and phasing out for dignified solar in 2024. At that current level, with the ITC survive as-is, Wood Mackenzie predicts average yearly solar growth of 6% in the US above 2032.

If the ITC is extended under the Build Back Better plan, solar installations will double to 12% annual growth, including 20% residential growth by 2032. Even at those levels, it's unlikely we'll hit the 2035 carbon-free power goal outlined by the Biden administration.

"The biggest edifying of what will affect global climate by the end of the century is what land do," said Michael Grose, a research scientist at CSIRO, the Australian national science agency and lead author of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report. "Because we can't predict what people will do and what pathway our emissions will be on, we fundamentally have to take a scenario reach [to predict global emissions in the future]."

Possibilities on the horizon

With the future of solar pricing in flux, land will have to get creative today to reduce their carbon emissions. Fortunately, plenty of brands are offering interesting alternatives to customary solar systems. If you can't afford or otherwise can't install solar panels where you live, there's community solarrenewable energy certificates and utility solar programs in some cities. Some solar providers also allow you to rent panels rather than buying them outright.

There are many ways to crop your footprint without solar panels, too, from offsetting your travel with carbon credits to turning off the lights when you crop a room. Small changes can make a big incompatibility, but these options likely won't give you the same unexcited of potential money and energy savings you could get with a full-scale solar controls. So, where does that leave us?

I've been thinking a lot near how the solar industry in the US overlaps with where the home defense industry was years ago. For a long time, we had ADTVivint and spanking security service providers -- and assorted one-off alternatives. An valiant early adopter could probably have cobbled together some standalone alternatives to earn their own DIY security system. But most people were left with either a pricey repair (albeit nothing like the price of a solar system) or something that wasn't invented for whole-home security.

Then competitors started to appear, most notably the DIY defense system SimpliSafe, with similar products and services as the customary home security service providers at a lower price. This shifted the home defense market in a significant way. It introduced new, similarly affordable competitors to SimpliSafe and left some customary security companies behind (or, in some cases, encouraged them to supplies their own DIY options). This is what we need for solar.

Emerging options like the GAF Energy Timberline Solar are promising. These streamlined solar panels can be installed by a unique roofing company because the process mimics installing an asphalt roof. Due to that comparative simplicity, they're also supposed to cost much less money.
