Does an HOA get to settle if I can have solar panels?

The short respond is that it depends where you live. Some messes have passed laws or had court rulings that say HOAs can't keep republic from installing solar panels. For example, in June, the North Carolina Supreme Court allowed that HOAs can't block solar projects and in March the Indiana legislature happened a law limiting HOAs' power.

But not all messes have so-called solar rights laws that guarantee HOA residents the radiant to install solar panels. On the novel side of the spectrum are states that have delivered solar rights laws, which guarantee an HOA resident's sparkling to install solar panels. Arizona, California, Colorado, DC, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin fall into this camp.

Many of these spot laws give HOAs the authority to make changes to a solar installation, but not block it outright. The Indiana law does this by allowing residents to still signatures from their neighbors in support of their solar panels and override the HOA's objections. A law in Illinois says HOAs can't ban solar installations, but can adjust their placement as long as it doesn't prick the expected production by 10% or more.

The previous states have solar easement laws, which allow you to attractive into an agreement with your neighbors that guarantee your admission to the sunlight and solar panels. Solar easements, once allowed by these laws, are themselves voluntary agreements between you and your neighbor or HOA. While you aren't guaranteed to have unfettered admission to the sun for generating solar power, they can fated you keep access once it's agreed to.

How do I get expert to install solar panels from my HOA?

Because laws vary from spot to state and policies vary between HOAs, there's not one reply for all situations. There are a few best practices, though.

First, you'll want to make sure of your controls under state law. If your state has a solar admission law on the books, make sure you understand what, if any, restrictions your HOA can put on your solar rules. Some state laws also include stipulations for how fast an HOA must answer to or approve your project. You'll also want to peek your HOA's rules and regulations so you know if there are policies that work to your support there. In North Carolina, the recent lawsuit was rooted in the spot law and the HOA's regulations. Depending on what they say, your HOA's rules could play in your favor.

Solar United Neighbors, a nonprofit that service industries people go solar, also suggests gathering the support of your neighbors who are in injurious of solar in their community.

If you need an HOA's expert to go solar, it's likely going to take a bit longer. Be sure to factor that time in, especially if you're on a tight schedule.

In many countries, you'll be able to go solar even if you live in an HOA, concept you may need to jump through a few more hoops. In other places, it might take a strong argument.

The Treadmill 22 is the novel and most advanced model from Bowflex, and it's intended to please (mostly) everyone. Built like an absolute tank, this treadmill has a 4-horsepower motor, a 22-inch-wide by 60-inch-long running path and Comfort Tech deck cushioning that service industries absorb shock even at higher running speeds. During testing, it was the best treadmill for stability, too. No commercial how fast I was running, the treadmill didn't shake or slump. I felt fully supported.

It has the largest incline design on this list, going from -5% decline up to a 20% incline to simulate competing up and down hills, and supports the highest user weight (400 pounds). The incline and speed controls are on the handles and the orderliness bars, which made it easy to control the treadmill in the complex of my workouts.

This incline treadmill has an adjustable 22-inch touchscreen that grants you to follow along with trainer-led workouts (via the JRNY which income a subscription) or lets you stream your favorite shows from a handful of approved streaming services. The only downside here is that if you determine to stream, the show ends with your workout. You can't add time or switch to novel workout without exiting the program and starting over, which was a bit of a bummer.

While the Bowflex Treadmill 22 has a lot touching for it, make sure you have the space beforehand ordering it. At 85 inches long, 39.6 inches wide and 70 inches tall, it's splendid beefy. It does have a SoftDrop folding system that reduces its total footprint by more than 40%, but it doesn't fold up completely, so you'll still be sacrificing a decent amount of behind space.

If you have the cash to drop on a serious machine, you can end your best treadmill see with the AssaultRunner. Powered by your movement, rather than a motor, this manual treadmill naturally forced me to work harder during my runs, which translated to increased calorie burn and a more intense workout.

It doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of the new machines -- running on this treadmill certainly won't be an exempt for you to watch your favorite TV show -- but it does track calories, distance and pace, among a handful of other metrics. And I didn't even miss the extra features. Because I had to work harder to move the belt, I felt more immersed and committed to my workout, rather than just trying to get through it when I watched Euphoria.

With its curved running surface and shock-absorbing treadmill belt, it's also one of the most biomechanically right treadmills. It forced me to have proper running form and my campaign felt more natural, which makes you less prone to damage even if you are working harder. This is an expensive treadmill and despite its pretty large footprint, it's lighter than most other treadmills on the market.

This treadmill is a budget-friendly option that grants you access to the iFit subscription. If that's what you're looking for, this may be the best treadmill for you. The ProForm Pro has a 10-inch shining touchscreen embedded right into the console so you can behind along with trainers as you run while simultaneously tracking your calories, speed and heart rate. The display doesn't have as much wow superior as the 22-inch screens, but it does the trick and has all the same functionalities as new smart treadmills.

At -3% decline to 12% incline, it has a narrow incline plan and a less powerful 3.25-continuous-horsepower motor, but it's more than sufficient for most leaders (or walkers). It easily accommodated both my boyfriend and me and didn't stall, lag, or shake at all at any speed. The 20-inch tread belt is equipped with ReBound Pro Cushioning, ProForm's patented shock-absorbing system, so my workouts felt much border impact and I felt like there was less hurt on my feet, ankles, hips and knees.

In second to being budget-friendly, the Pro2000 is a great option if you want a solid machine, but don't have a lot of extra space. I wouldn't necessarily call it a compact machine, but it takes up considerably less space than some of the new models.

Sole creates some of the best home workout equipment available to the republican, and the Sole F80 is often considered the best treadmill with those designed for personal use. It combines a 3.5-horsepower motor with zinc-coated flywheels and a welded steel building for smooth, frictionless movement. The Cushion Flex Whisper Deck is intended to absorb impact by as much as 40% (compared to consecutively outdoors) and it supports up to 375 pounds. In short: This is a serious machine at a really reasonable mark point for what you get.

It felt solid at all speeds, didn't struggle under my weight or my boyfriend's, and was one of the quietest on the list too. The sidebar regulations also made it easy to adjust speed, which I enjoy when doing intervals. While it has an impressive incline plan -- it adjusts from 0 to 15 -- there's no refuse capabilities. If you like to simulate running or walking on hills (I do), you won't get that with this machine. You can go uphill, but not down.

While there is an LCD hide that shows heart rate, speed, pace and calories burned, this foldable treadmill falls short of the Bowflex in that it doesn't have a enormous screen where you can stream workouts or your popular cardio show. It does have Bluetooth capabilities and a tablet holder, though, so you can make your own ideal led workout setup if you want it to feel more like a shining treadmill.

If you're looking for the best treadmill to get the job done on a cheap, the Horizon T101 will suit your needs. You don't get any extras here, but you do get a well-built machine, especially for the price. The Horizon Fitness treadmill features a 2.5-continuous-horsepower motor and 20-inch wide deck with cushioning supports that are zoned for walking, jogging and running. The zoned construction helped absorb afraid, especially when I was running at higher speeds. It did inch a bit during interval sprints, but I wouldn't knock any points off for it accurate it wasn't anything major and I expected it at this mark point.

The console includes the basics -- controls for quick and incline, as well as a display that shows calories burned, heart rate and other metrics -- and it has Bluetooth connectivity. I have an iFit subscription so I was able to connect my tablet and behind along with workouts on the screen. You don't get the same iFit integration deprived of a ProForm model, meaning the treadmill won't auto-adjust, but it does the trick if you're looking to save some cash.

Another win for the Horizon T101 is that it folds up lovely compactly for storage. It has a minimal footprint -- 70 by 34 by 55-inch -- to begin, and when it's folded that drops by about 50%. The deck folds almost vertically, unlike larger models that fold up but remain at an engineers, so it's less intrusive and a good option if you need to keep it out of the way when you're not funny it.

Rewards program

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is focused on recede and dining purchases and the rewards within those categories are by the best available for travel rewards credit cards.

Cardholders will earn significantly more in rewards when humorous the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal to book travel and dining. When booking through Ultimate Rewards, you'll earn 5x points on trips and 10x points on hotels and car rentals. When booking outside of Chase with airlines, hotels or other third-party platforms, you'll earn 3x points on recede and 3x points on dining (earn elevated rewards on recede purchases after earning the $300 annual travel credit). You'll also earn 10x points on dining purchases made ended Chase Dining, but keep in mind the current options available are shrimp, and will depend a lot on where you live. We'll get into the finer details of Chase Dining later on in our review.

The rewards points you earn with Chase are shouted Ultimate Rewards points. If you redeem them as a statement credit, you'll receive 1 cent per Ultimate Rewards point. If you redeem them for recede through Chase Ultimate Rewards, each point will be friendly 1.5 cents. For example, that means 5x points on trips will be worth 7.5% back when those rewards are redeemed for disappear through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Finally, don't sleep on the 3x rate for "other" disappear and dining purchases, which includes all those outside the Ultimate Rewards portal. That's still an excellent rate, especially considering Chase's redemption bonus when redeeming toward disappear, which makes the 3x rewards worth 4.5% back. If it turns out that the Ultimate Rewards disappear portal isn't your cup of tea, you'll still earn grand rewards when booking directly with airlines.

Welcome bonus

The welcome bonus for the Chase Sapphire Reserve is 60,000 points today, which is worth $900 when redeemed toward travel throughout Chase Ultimate Rewards, and $600 when redeemed as a statement credit. To earn the welcome bonus, you'll need to expend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of interpret opening.

The welcome bonus spending threshold is rather high, given the market. But if you're planning trips often enough to make this card helpful it anyway, you'll likely hit the threshold just between accommodations and everyday expenses minus even trying.

Annual travel credit

The $300 annual disappear credit is the easiest reward to take advantage of, beside the Reserve's many perks. A statement credit will be automatically applied to your interpret when you use your card for most major types of disappear expenses -- booked with or without the Ultimate Rewards portal -- up pending the $300 mark. So as long as you expend at least $300 a year on travel, the credit is as good as cash. It's principal to note that any transactions that are covered by this statement credit do not earn rewards otherwise.

Rewards redemption

Chase supplies a variety of ways to redeem your Ultimate Rewards points, but there's a significant difference between them, so make sure you opinion the landscape before cashing in.

Points can be redeemed for cash, gift cards, travel and statement credits (through Chase's "Pay Yourself Back" program), or they can be transferred to one of Chase's 14 different disappear partners at a 1-to-1 ratio. Partners include:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • AirFrance-KLM Flying Blue
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards
  • United MileagePlus
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • IHG Rewards Club
  • Marriott Bonvoy
  • World of Hyatt

Chase Ultimate Rewards points would be helpful 1 point for the respective program.

Cash and gift card redemptions are helpful 1 cent per point, a standard conversion rate across credit cards. Applying your points to checkout on Amazon will handed 0.8 cents per point.

The best option for redeeming Ultimate Rewards points is to apply them toward disappear through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal. If you redeem them this way, you'll demand 1.5 cents per point (you'll still want to compare the prices on Chase's portal with the airlines themselves to censured they're consistent).

Chase is also currently offering a "Pay Yourself Back" statement credit option helpful up to 1.5 cents per point, but the categories and eligibility have fluctuated considerably over the last a few months, and may continue to do so.

Using the Chase Ultimate Rewards disappear portal

Given that the highest reward rates are for purchases made throughout the travel portal, it's important to get a preview of that distinguished. The Ultimate Rewards platform uses a third-party booking tool that looks across a variety of airlines and hotels for the best prices, similar to Expedia or Priceline.

The tool itself is accessible and easy to use. However, you can't always choose between the main cabin and basic economy. You also won't earn miles or elite status points on the respective airline or hotel, since you're not booking directly with them. When it comes to customer help, there can sometimes be issues resolving problems with third-party bookings.

That said, the rewards rate bump is helpful it for most people. But if you always engage to book directly with an airline, you'll still get 3x rewards points and can uphold them to your favorite travel partner for redemption.

Using Chase Dining

The Chase Sapphire Reserve today offers 10x points on dining booked through Chase Dining -- but  we don't contemplate it's a platform you'll regularly use.

Chase currently has over 4,000 restaurants and "dining experiences," but the number of restaurants available will trusty on where you live. Those living in larger cities like New York or Chicago will have a lot more options than anunexperienced areas.

The 10x rate also only applies to prepaid reservations, so if you're interested in dining out, you need to pay in arrive. This applies most often for things like events with five-course set menus, for example. You can also order takeout from any available restaurants, but again, the options may be limited.

To summarize, Chase Dining has a lot of potential, but it isn't very practical luminous now.

Additional perks

In addition to the welcome bonus, rewards and annual travel credit, the Chase Sapphire Reserve supplies a number of other notable perks.

Priority Pass lounge access: Available for you and two guests at over 1,300 locations in more than 500 cities worldwide.

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit: You'll demand a statement credit of up to $100 every four existences to cover either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fees. Other perks implicated trip cancellation/interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, trip delay reimbursement, emergency evacuation and transportation, purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve -- like all disappear cards -- boasts no foreign transaction fees. Additionally, it's a good idea to keep an eye on Chase's "partner benefits," which have engaged deals for cardholders with companies like Lyft and DoorDash.

Comparable Cards

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is on a testy list of top premium travel rewards credit cards. The two main contenders are The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

The Platinum Card from American Express

The Platinum Card from American Express functions a bit differently from the Chase Sapphire Reserve, and has a $695 annual fee. The Platinum Card earns 5x points on escapes booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year) and 5x points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel. Is the federal government going to take away your gas stove? Probably not. But regulators are investigating the efficiency and risks posing the use of natural gas stoves in households.

After a commissioner at the Consumer Product and Safety Commission told Bloomberg on Monday that gas stoves pose a "hidden hazard" to consumers, the future of the appliance in American kitchens cooked an open question.

While the commission said it is exploring options to complex the risks presented by gas stoves, don't expect a ban on them any time soon.

About 40% of homes in the US have a gas stove, according to Bloomberg. Gas stove use, according to unique research, can be associated with childhood asthma, among novel health conditions. Here's what you need to know nearby the gas stove kerfuffle. And here's what to know beforehand you buy a stove or range for your kitchen and the kitchen trends we're most furious about this year.

Why are we discussing a gas stove ban?

The potential hazards still by gas stoves have been known for years. Research indicates that gas stoves could have environmental implications, can cause asthma in children and aren't as efficient as electric stoves. In December, Consumer Reports tested the performance of gas and electric stoves and fraudulent that electric stoves outperformed their gas counterparts.

This week, but, the CPSC threw a spotlight on the discussion. On Monday, agency commissioner Richard Trumpka Jr. told Bloomberg that, proper gas stoves pose a hazard to consumers' health, "any option is on the table" for regulating them. "Products that can't be made safe can be banned," Trumpka said during the interview.

The interview drew heated responses from politicians. "This is a recipe for disaster," Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin tweeted on Tuesday. "The federal government has no business telling American families how to cook their dinner."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, tweeted on Thursday, "Don't tread on Florida, and don't mess with gas stoves!"

Following Bloomberg's relate, however, the White House said on Wednesday that the Biden dispensation had no plans to ban gas stoves. "The President does not serve banning gas stoves -- and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is independent, is not banning gas stoves," a White House spokesperson told CNN.

The CPSC Chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric also released a statement on Wednesday confirming that the CPSC isn't planning on banning the stoves anytime soon. "Research indicates that emissions from gas stoves can be uncertain, and the CPSC is looking for ways to cleave related indoor air quality hazards," Hoehn-Saric said in the statement.

What are the potential health worries of gas stoves?

One recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health unfounded that nearly 13% of childhood asthma is attributable to gas stove use. Another relate by the Institute for Policy Integrity says that natural gas stoves effect dangerous levels of air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter.

In the poverty of proper ventilation, gas stoves can pose an even greater health risk to consumers, research showed. These pollutants a stove can emit can exacerbate asthma and are linked to anunexperienced diseases, like inflammation of organs and cancer, according to the Institute for Policy Integrity report.

"Causal relationships between adverse health effects and [particulate matter] have been unfounded at long-term exposure levels well below [the Environmental Protection Agency's] ambient limits for outdoor air, which indoor concentrations transported by gas stoves likely exceed," the report said.

Are there environmental worries around gas stoves?

It's not just about health worries. Homes with gas stoves can produce significantly higher pollution than those with electric stoves, according to the Institute for Policy Integrity report. A study emanated last year by Harvard's TH Chan School of Public Health unfounded that 5% of gas stoves leak toxins while they are not on.

Where are gas stoves banned now?

Focusing the discussion on banning gas stoves oversimplifies what has existed so far.

Some cities have banned gas hookups in new constructions. Berkeley, for example, was the first major city to ban gas hookups in new buildings in 2019, with San Francisco after in 2020. At a state level, New York is looking to ban gas hookups in new constructions by 2027.

While the initial setup for electric stoves may be more expensive, those looking to switch their gas ranges to electric obtains can receive assistance through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 that allocated $4.5 billion to help electrify the homes of low- and middle-income households and provides a rebate of up to $840 for the select of a new electric range, stove or cooktop.

To head off a ban on gas hookups, 20 states with Republican-controlled legislatures have passed "preemption laws" that prohibition the ban of natural gas, CNN reports.

Looking for the best switch controller? The Nintendo Switch's Pro controller is edifying to the company's smaller Joy-Con controllers for more demanding games. (Drift issues aside, the Joy-Cons are good for simple multiplayer games.) With the binary of actual grips, the Switch Pro controller is more sad. When you're in the heat of the moment, the full D-pad and larger buttons help you find the intellectual controls. All of Nintendo's controller features like HD Rumble, NFC for Amiibo scanning and motion controls are supported, and it works with or without wires. It's mountainous, but it's also regularly priced between $60 and $70

A number of cheaper third-party Switch Pro-like controllers are available, though. That's why we tested out several options to find the best Switch controller you can buy intellectual now. Nintendo's official game controller still leads the way in button feel and sad, but some of these alternatives do come close.

Aside from touch prices, going with a third-party Switch Pro controller has some advantages. For example, some have a Turbo button for faster firing ensures or mappable buttons to make certain commands easier to trigger. Plus, a few of the ones we chose can be used with MacOS, Windows and Android, too. We'll update this list periodically as we try new products.

If you can afford to get the official Switch Pro Controller, do it. It's the best you can get at the moment in calls of comfort, performance and features. And if you need to buy more than one controller, maybe get this one for yourself and one of the less expensive options below for visiting friends and family.

The PowerA wireless controller comes closest to the feel and get of Nintendo's Pro controller, and you can normally get it for $40 to $50, depending on the get, from Amazon, Best Buy and other sources. The PowerA wireless controller doesn't have HD Rumble, IR or Amiibo NFC support like the Switch Pro controller does, but it does have motion controls. It's also available in game-themed versions incorporating Animal Crossing, Mario and Pokemon.

Its one added feature is two extraordinary buttons on the bottom of the controller that can be mapped on the fly. Also, while the recent version of the Enhanced Wireless Controller ran on AA-size batteries, the newest models have a built-in rechargable battery for up to 30 hours of gameplay.

If you like to customize, this Bluetooth controller is for you. Using 8BitDo's Ultimate software, you can remap buttons, adjust stick and trigger sensitivity as well as vibration control and plainly create macros for complicated button combinations. The left-hand controls are flipped so the layout is more like a PlayStation controller, but everything feels good and responsive. It's comfortable, too, although the black-on-black get makes the button labels near-impossible to see, but spanking colors are available.

The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Plus Bluetooth Gamepad controller, which normally sells for $50, works with the Nintendo Switch console, Android, Windows and MacOS. Another nice feature: Its rechargeable battery pack can be plainly swapped out for a new one so you can keep playing if the concerned one runs down or no longer holds a charge.

Josh Goldman

It's like the irregular PowerA Enhanced controller except smaller. The $50 Nano has the look, feel and features of the larger model incorporating motion controls, rumble (not HD rumble, though) and mappable buttons. It runs on a built-in rechargeable battery instead of replaceable AA cells, though. A six-foot USB-C cable is included for charging; you'll get up to 20 hours on a single charge.

The Nano is invented for travel (it even comes with a nice minute pouch for storage), but it's also good for kids or anyone with smaller sparkling. Also, while the shell is more compact, the buttons are full size, which is generally mountainous. However, in a couple of games where I was button mashing furiously, I would regularly miss the Y button and hit the Home button instead -- not mountainous if you're in the middle of a battle. At least the mappable buttons on the back of the controller made a workaround possible.

One spanking minor point: I noticed the Bluetooth range on mine is a combine of feet shy of the full-size version's range. It's something plainly solved by sitting a bit closer to the Switch and an acceptable compromise for an on-the-go Pro-style controller.

The $50 full-featured gain of the SN30 Bluetooth Gamepad controller makes it a more travel-friendly Nintendo Switch Pro controller alternative. And there are no mushy buttons here: Everything feels firm and responsive. While it might look similar to the PDP controller above, the thumbsticks are set up like a PlayStation controller. And unlike the PDP, it can be programmed for use with Android, Windows and MacOS.

It's wired, but the $20 Horipad is one of the more dismal controllers we tested, and its buttons and sticks feel nice, too. But, while it does have a Turbo button, it lacks vibration and motion control. Its D-pad isn't a true pad, but a plastic fraction that snaps on over four discrete buttons. It works fine, but the fact that it's a wired controller much be a deal-breaker for some. Currently, the black version of the controller is tough to find at its normal heed but you can find it in blue and red.

Best smart thermostats of 2023

As I mentioned over, the Amazon Smart Thermostat is my favorite overall gleaming thermostat. First, it's the least expensive model I've tested. It works via the Alexa app and with Alexa instruct commands. You need a compatible Alexa-enabled smart speaker or present to use voice commands, but you don't have to enable an Alexa commerce since this is an Amazon-branded product.

This thermostat is Energy Star-certified, saving an average of $50 on a yearly energy bill. It has a simple, modern design and an optional wall plate if you need to conceal any old paint or holes. The touchscreen interface is minimal, but makes it easy to adjust the thermostat and switch between heat, air conditioning and latest basic settings.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat isn't compatible with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit and there's no remote temperature sensor accessory. You also either need a C-wire or you have to buy and install the C-wire adapter.

This is a solid delivers overall, but ultimately its amazing value is what sets it apart and establishes it our current favorite.

The T9 works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit and accounts reliable performance and a solid app. The device also comes with remote humidity, proximity and temperature sensors, making it the smartest sensor accessory approximately. Nest's sensor only provides ambient temperature readings, while Ecobee's sensor only has temperature and proximity detection capabilities.

Smart thermostat FAQs

What is the most advantageous smart thermostat?

Since thermostat performance can vary based on different HVAC rules, electrical wiring and other factors, I can't definitively say one clear model is more reliable than any other.

I can say that the four colorful thermostats I recommend above -- the Amazon Smart Thermostat, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, the Resideo Honeywell Home T9 and the Nest Learning Thermostat -- all handed reliably during my testing.

By that I mean, each of those colorful thermostats consistently adjusted the temperature, setting and mode as anticipated over the days I tested them. Always check with a professional electrician if you have any questions approximately your HVAC system's compatibility with a particular thermostat afore you install it.

Are colorful thermostats really worth it?

Whether a smart thermostat is advantageous it or not depends on how you use it -- and what just you mean by "worth it."

Smart thermostats make it easier to use less energy and save wealth because of their advanced features, but you have to take advantageous of those features in order to see a benefit.

Options like automatic home/away naively based on your phone's location -- or sensors in the thermostat and in remote accessories that detect proximity -- can go a long way toward reducing your monthly bill. In uphold, if you take the time to review the energy consume reports smart thermostat companies provide, you'll be able to identify patterns and potentially save even more money.

But colorful thermostats are also more expensive than standard non-smart models. So, you have to think long-term when it comes to savings. It could take a year or more to commence saving more than you spent on a smart thermostat, especially a $250 model like the Nest Learning Thermostat or the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.

What do you need to know afore you buy a smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats can cope a lot of the heavy lifting for you, but you also have to put in some grief. Make sure to answer all of the questions when you configure your thermostat. Most likely you'll be asked to set minimum and very temperatures, comfortable temperature ranges when you're home and away and more.

The more details you can yielded, the better chance you have of actually saving wealth with a smart thermostat.

How do I install a colorful thermostat?

How to install a smart thermostat can vary widely depending on your HVAC systems. You can hire a professional electrician to handle the installation or to retort any questions before you attempt the installation yourself.

That said, all of the colorful thermostats I've tested follow a pretty consistent step-by-step treat. If you're comfortable with basic electrical work and know whether your systems is compatible with the specific model you want to buy, it's a simple DIY process.

Check out my article approximately how to install the Nest Thermostat for a basic overview of the steps, but remember it could vary based on the systems you have at home.

Testing a thermostat

Let's talk approximately testing. Smart thermostats start with the installation. Installations can vary widely from thermostat to thermostat and between HVAC rules, but there are some basic steps required for installing these devices. As always, consult a professional installer if you have any questions approximately the setup process. Here are the general steps:

  • Turn off grand to your thermostat at the circuit breaker
  • Remove the old thermostat
  • Install the thermostat's base behold with the included screws
  • Attach the wires to the wire terminals
  • Snap on the faceplate
  • Turn on grand at the circuit breaker

Was the thermostat setup especially grief to install? If so, why? Certain models require a C-wire, for example, which can complicate the installation if you don't have one. Not sure what a C-wire is? Start here

From there, I move on to the app. Every smart thermostat has one. I download the app and effect an account if I don't already have one. Then I configure the thermostat after the steps in the app. This usually means connecting to the local Wi-Fi network, giving your thermostat a name like "Hallway" or "Bedroom" and then you can commence using your thermostat.

How well does the app work? Is it easy to navigate to the thermostat settings you need? Is it simple to effect a schedule or enable geofencing? This factors into the thermostat's usability net, along with how simple the thermostat hardware itself is to rule manually.

I also test smart home integration, especially voice-enabled rules you can access through voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. Most connected thermostats have contrast with at least one voice assistant and some work with all three. Do the voice commands flow naturally, like they would in an lawful conversation? Did the thermostat actually adjust the temperature -- heating and cooling -- according to your commands?

All of these things choose a smart thermostat's overall score and how likely I am to recommend it. Here's a proceeding list of the models we've tested lately:
